Oddballs and Bird Brains

Here’s an interesting piece I found in Cage and Aviary mag.
I don’t think I’ve ever known a bird that didn’t have their own individual quirks!

Editor’s letter (September 2 issue) – Cage & Aviary

One of the challenges of keeping birds must surely be their unpredictable nature. All birds have personalities, and while certain species might have common characteristics — for example birdsong and nesting habits — there will always be individuals who go against the grain or do completely unexpected things.

You only need to look at our letters page to see the proof of this. Last week Teri Wright told us about her Irish canary hen that imitated the telephone (“Sorry, it’s not the phone, it’s my canary!” August 26) and this week Alan Elmore tells us about his budgerigars that burrow underground (see Letter of the Week in this week’s issue).Turn further into the issue and you will see another reader, Dianna Pickersgill, tell us about 15 of her Bengalese finches all trying to cram into the one nest-box (Ask Cage & Aviary Birds, page 7).

Which begs the question: what weird or unusual behaviour have you seen your own birds get up to? Anything that made you laugh, cry or raise your eyebrows?
